Swim Gear for Guppies Providing Free Equipment to Learning Swimmers
$7 will provide goggles, a swim cap, and a bathing suit for one child
Being a strong swimmer is not only an amazing recreational ability, but is also a life-saving skill that all children should have access to develop.
Over 60% of Black/African American children cannot swim, yet 87% of non-swimmer youth report having plans to visit a beach or pool during the summer months. Historical data show that the incidence of drowning among children of color is 2-5 times higher than their white counterparts.
The East Orange YMCA provides swim lessons to children in a fun, affirming environment. However, appropriate, long-lasting swim gear can be prohibitively expensive for many families.
We have the opportunity to provide no-cost, high-quality swim gear to over 100 children so they can learn to become life-long swimmers. We’ve partnered with a nonprofit who will send free, brand-new Nike, Speedo, TYR and similar brand goggles, swim caps, and bathing suits if we can pay the shipping and handling.
$7 will provide everything a child needs to attend swim classes. That’s less than you would pay retail for just the swim cap!
Getting brand new gear is also a great morale booster for any kids who may feel hesitant about their lessons, and sends the message that our community cares about them.
Research suggests a number of cultural and historical factors that explain why children of color are at a higher risk for drowning, but swim lessons can reduce that risk by up to 88%. It also opens up a world of recreation and athleticism.
Please consider sponsoring one or more sets of swim gear for the kids at the East Orange YMCA.
